Food ingredients in Cosmetics Formulations

In the last few years it is quite evident that the world is moving towards a healthier way of living. In the past, natural and organic foods were considered a trend, but nowadays they can be easily found in supermarkets, chain stores and online. People today are more aware of the food they are consuming and try to avoid artificial and processed food. The same is proving true for cosmetic products. What is healthy for your body is considered healthy for your skin. Consumers are learning to ask questions and to read labels. They are influenced by social media influencers and are looking for natural sourced ingredients in their skin care products.

Cosmetic formulation is changing as a result of these tendencies. Formulators are constantly searching for innovative ingredients that will answer the need for healthier products. It is quite common today to find in skin care products ingredients like Shea butter, olive and coconut oil.

The list of food ingredients used in skin care products is long and each year new ingredients are introduced. Only this January, In the Indie Beauty Expo in L.A, more than 150 brands participated, among them beauty and skincare brands, introducing food ingredients in their product formulations, such as Quinoa, Pistachio, Apricot, Watermelon and many more.

The tendency towards a healthier lifestyle is affecting the method of preserving skin care products as well. Skin care companies are searching for natural and “Free from” preservative solutions. The definition of “natural” is sometimes unclear and not regulated. Natural preservatives do not always meet the demands of manufacturers, for reasons such as compatibility, cost, or availability. When it comes to broad spectrum protection, many natural preservative solutions are less effective and a higher level of use is required.

Maltol can be found in the bark of larch tree, Katsura tree (Cercidiphyllum japonicum), in pine needles, and more. It comes as a white crystalline powder. It has EWG score of 1, GRAS, found in Cosing and has a good solubility in water.
